Battlefield Easter EGG Hint
On December 18th, 2011 in News, Rumor
DICE is known for including various Easter Eggs on maps, especially little, vague ones to tease upcoming games. For instance, back in 2006 they included some Easter Eggs in Battlefield 2: Euro Forces and Armored Fury map packs, which hinted at a new title called “2142″ — way before Battlefield 2142 was officially announced.
If we are to follow the same logic this time, a sequel to Battlefield 2142 is very possible, as an Easter Egg on Wake Island shows the number “2143″. We don’t think that’s a coincidence, in fact, it might just be the very first hint at Battlefield 2143.
Thanks to Sammy for the awesome tip!

According to an anonymous report BF3Blog received from inside Valve, the developer/publisher is currently in late-stage talks with EA in bringing Battlefield 3 to the Steam digital distribution service. The rumor says that Battlefield 3 would be available on Steam just in time for the game’s release on October 25.
According to the report, EA and Valve are very close to reaching an agreement regarding sales of DLC content, which is the main reason Battlefield 3 is not on Steam: Valve requires that all DLC is sold through Steam, while EA would prefer to sell via its own channels. This was the cause of another EA title, Crysis 2, for being pulled from Steam earlier this year.
Many PC gamers have lobbied both EA and Valve to put Battlefield 3 on Steam for a while now. It looks like it’ll finally happen soon.
We’ve reached out to EA and Valve for a comment on this story.

At this year’s E3, Nintendo unveiled their brand new console. Called Wii U, the console is rumored to be 50% more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and a number of games were showcased at the E3 event, including a version of Battlefield 3.
Nintendo’s new console also features a groundbreaking new tablet controller, in addition to the Wii motion sensor. According to DICE developer Patrick Liu, the company definitely sees potential in Nintendo’s new console. Liu said:
“We definitely see potential in the Wii U, but I wish I had the breakthrough idea for how to exploit the new controller. We’re definitely looking into what kind of new stuff we can do with Wii U.”
A “breakthrough idea” sounds like a good start, as we’d rather not see a straight port of Battlefield 3 to the Wii U. During the first few years of the Wii, a lot games tacked on the Wiimote functionality, giving it a gimmicky feel. Sounds like DICE is taking a good first step by figuring out how the best utilize the new technology.
The Wii U is slated for release during the Fall of 2012, about a year from now. A previous report indicated that DICE would start development on the Wii U version late next year, which indicates a 2013 Battlefield 3 Wii U release.

According to a new report emerging from French Battlefield portal planete-battlefield.fr, Battlefield’s French community representative “Kusa” has spilled the beans on the status of the Battlefield 3 beta: it’s ready for release, and the only thing DICE is waiting for is a content approval from Microsoft and Sony, in order to get the beta running on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC version is ready as well, but DICE is holding back in order to get a simultaneous beta release across all platforms.
So far this is unconfirmed by DICE, but considering that Microsoft and Sony usually take at least a week or two in order to approve content (whether it’s DLC, game download, etc.), it’s not entirely unrealistic to assume that the beta is in fact ready, and that all we (and DICE) are waiting for is a go-ahead from the console makers.

When Nintendo unveiled their Wii U console earlier this Summer at E3, EA showcased a bunch of titles in a trailer. Among those titles was Battlefield 3, which is slated to become the first Battlefield game on a Nintendo console.
According to rumors from WiiUDaily, developer DICE are using all of their resources on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Battlefield 3, working crunch time to make sure the game ships on October 25. According to the rumor, DICE is in possession of a Wii U development unit, but so far haven’t considered porting Battlefield 3 to the Wii U. In fact, it’s not even in the planning stages yet. The earliest a Wii U version of Battlefield 3 would start development would be “well into 2012″, which would mean a 2013 release date. Of course, none of this is confirmed by EA/DICE — so far Battlefield 3 hasn’t gotten an official release date on the Wii U.
WiiUDaily notes that the 250+ strong DICE team is hard at work on BF3 and will be spending considerable time after release working on patches, updates and post content (DLC). The Wii U is the next generation Nintendo console which is said to be 50% more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, and will include an innovative new controller and will support full 1080p gameplay.

Yesterday we reported that Origin would be required to play retail copies of Battlefield 3, and possible digital downloads as well. This wasn’t a big surprise and most gamers wouldn’t mind, but we’ve now got some news that might arouse some anger and disappointment among fans.
In the past Battlefield games, players would create an account for the Battlefield game (e.g. BF2 or Bad Company 2), and they subsequently could create several profiles or soldiers to play as. Now, according to DICE’s Daniel Matros, one’s Battlefield 3 soldier is tied to the Origin account. In the Battlefield 3 alpha, one’s soldier name was the same as the Origin profile, and there was no way of changing it or creating a new soldier. In order to change your in-game name, you had to change your Origin profile name. However, this was an alpha version, and it’s a possible that certain player features were turned off.
But Matros specifically commented on Twitter regarding the ability to chose a player name in Battlefield 3 by saying “your name is linked to your origin persona“. It suggests that there would be only one player per Origin account, which is quite disappointing, seeing how the feature was available in almost all other Battlefield games (we’re not certain whether it’s possible to create multiple Origin profiles without having to re-purchase games). Unlike consoles, PC players have had a choice of not only choosing their name, but creating a new soldier and starting from scratch, if they so desired. This also leads us to believe that Origin will be required regardless of where Battlefield 3 is purchased — retail or any of the digital distribution platforms.
We hope that this isn’t the final decision regarding player profiles and that DICE reconsiders keeping the feature that was present in many Battlefield games. And while we can understand why EA would tightly integrate Battlefield 3 into Origin, this is perhaps taking it a step too far.

While we’re all waiting and wondering what new Battlefield 3 details DICE will release next, we get sidetracked with something completely unexpected. Like a new listing on Amazon and other online retailers for a Battlefield 3 book.
Naturally, there’s a chance that this could be a simple error on Amazon’s side, perhaps someone confused the book with the game. However, the game is already listed on Amazon and available for pre-order. Other online retailers such as Barnes & Noble have the Battlefield 3 book listed as well.
According to Amazon’s details on the book, it spans 400 pages and is written by DICE member Patrick Bach, alongside Andy McNab, who is a published author and former SAS operative. It’s easy to speculate about the contents of the book, as it could be a simple “behind the scenes” or “making of” book. However, with Andy McNab as the co-author, this could very well be the book version of Battlefield 3′s singleplayer storyline.
The book will be published by Grand Central Publishing and will be released on October 25, according to Amazon.

According to EA’s Download Manager (EADM), Battlefield 3 will be released on November 2, 2011. Of course, this might well be a temporary release date, simply put for placeholder purposes. EA and always stated that Battlefield 3 release date is “Fall 2011″, without any specifics.
Of course, competition matters a lot, and Battlefield 3′s release date will definitely be set after consideration when Modern Warfare 3 will be released, as those two games are set to go head to head this Fall. The previous two Modern Warfare games were released in the beginning of November during their respective launch years, so it’s safe to assume that Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 to duke it out in the beginning of November this year.

According to news site “Cerfy“, who was present at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, and had a chance to play Battlefield 3, and they’ve revealed an interesting take on melee combat in Battlefield 3. Specifically, according to the source, it was possible to use the mouse to punch with either hand, and to block punches as well. Note that only the singleplayer portion of the game was on display, so this might have been a “cinematic” or a quick time event, something which many games of late have featured, where you are required to counter the enemy without any other options.
We still don’t know a lot about the singleplayer besides the few trailers we’ve seen. But we know absolutely nothing about the multiplayer part, and it’s unlikely something like quick time events will find their way into fast the paced multiplayer component.
